Searching for food and meals that are good (healthful and delicious), clean (sustainably produced) and fair (with respect for social justice).
Today’s Lunch:
I’ll be looking for another egg source, as after my most recent trip to the market, I learned Sunrise Chickens are simply kept in “open concept barns” without access to pasture. I’d like my chickens pasture raised, at least during the appropriate seasons.
Today’s Breakfast:
Well, the worst part of this exploration of my food are some not so fun discoveries of food I’ve thought was good.
After eating today’s breakfast, I discovered Kashi (owned by the larger Kellogg’s) has, beyond my notice, been the subject of fairly intense criticism from members of the clean-eating community. As of September, 2011 they were facing a class-action lawsuit for use of hazardous substances in their foods; Kashi also contains high levels of GMO soy: in fact, 100% of the soy in the cereal was genetically modified. Not good!
I’m also wondering how clean-eating conscious lactose-intolerant individuals come to terms with clean dairy. Anyone know any organic, animal-conscious dairy farmers in the GTA? Could I use the lacteeze drops?
Tomato Sauce!
Tonight’s dinner featured fresh tomato sauce! There was a lovely bucket of them at the Market on Saturday and even though I’m not a tomato girl, we wanted some for the BBQ sauce and lucked out with just the right amount for it and sauce. This photo is obviously not the final sauce…
Carrots, celery, tomato, olive oil, garlic and onion - and a bay leaf during cooking. It wasverydelicate - perhaps too delicate. We had it on fresh pasta with parmesean and chopped basil from our balcony. Yum!
A collection of this week’s meals, including:
Green leaf & romaine salad with radishes, carrot, eggs and emmental (all except cheese from St. Lawrence Market).
Quinoa (with Earth Balance & parsley), broiled portabello topped with arugula and broiled asparagus (portabello and asparagus with garlic balsamic glaze) (All Market)
Whole wheat bows with shrimp, tomato sauce and spinach (only spinach was local. Wah-wah.)
Tonight’s Dinner:
Homemade Diana Sauce
We just used up the last of our much-loved Diana sauce, and I’m searching for a healthier alternative. I just found this recipe over at Oh She Glows and can’t wait to try it out!
I think in addition to her modifications on molasses, we’d also replace the French’s with our Kozlik’s Amazing Maple mustard for a delicious sweet flavour that might allow us to reduce sugar added.
